Structural steelwork: fabrication and erection for industry

We fabricate and erect structural steelwork for industrial plants in Spain and Portugal, working from Les Franqueses del Vallès, in the province of Barcelona. We work in steel, and can supply the fabrication, the erection or both.

What structural steelwork is

Structural steelwork is the steel frame that carries load in a plant or building: columns, beams, bracing, platforms, walkways, stairs, pipe racks and equipment supports. It is made from rolled sections and plate, normally in grades such as S275 and S355, cut, drilled and welded or bolted into assemblies and then erected on site.

¿Qué tipos de estructura hacéis (soportes, plataformas, pasarelas, naves…)?

Steel fabrication and steel erection

Fabrication is making the steelwork from drawings: cutting, drilling, fitting up and welding the members. Erection is lifting it into place on site and bolting or welding it together. You can hire us for either, or for both.

¿Hacéis también el chorreado, la pintura o el galvanizado, o los subcontratáis?

Steel erection on your site

Where the steelwork has to go up in a working plant, our crews travel to your site and erect it there. Tell us what has to be fitted around, so we can plan the sequence.

EN 1090 and execution classes

EN 1090 governs how steel and aluminium structures are executed in Europe. It defines four execution classes, EXC1 to EXC4, which the design sets according to the consequences of a failure and the type of use. The higher the class, the more demanding the welding, materials, inspection and documentation.

For CE-marked structural components, the fabricator proves its factory production control with a certificate issued by a notified body.

Finish and protection

Steelwork is normally protected against corrosion by blast cleaning and paint, or by hot-dip galvanising. The specification depends on the environment and on the design life.

Structural steelwork, welding and installation

Steelwork is welded, and it usually goes in with equipment and pipework. Each of those has its own page.

What we need to quote

With this information we can reply with a proposal.

  • Drawings, or a sketch with dimensions and a list of members
  • Steel grade and finish
  • The execution class and the standard required
  • Whether you need fabrication, erection or both
  • Where the site is and when the work is needed

Frequently asked questions

What is structural steel work?

Structural steel work is the fabrication and erection of the steel frame that carries load in a building or plant: columns, beams, bracing, platforms and supports. The members are made in the shop or on site and fixed together by bolting or welding.

Which is better, S275 or S355?

Neither is better in general: S355 has a higher minimum yield strength than S275, so a member can be lighter for the same load, while S275 is usually specified where strength is not what governs the design. The designer chooses the grade for each member.

Is structural steel stronger than concrete?

It depends on the kind of strength. Steel is far stronger in tension and gives more strength for its weight, while concrete is strong in compression and resists fire better when unprotected. That is why many structures combine the two.

Which EN 1090 execution class do I need?

The designer of the structure sets the class, based on the consequences of a failure and the type of use, from EXC1 for the simplest structures to EXC4 for the most demanding. It is written into the project specification.
